The Hired Hand: A Case of Clergy Abuse
Published in Paperback by PublishAmerica, Inc. (November, 2001)
Author: Donna E. Scott
Average review score:

Power must be equal for sex to be consensual
In the Hired Hand, Donna Scott tells the story of a woman sexually abused by her pastor. Part One tells The Setup: the issues that brought Renee to pastoral counseling, details of how Pastor Smith sexualized their counseling sessions, an explanation of the danger signals that might have alerted Renee if she had not been wounded and trusting of her pastor, a look inside the head of the hired hand contrasted with that of a good shepherd, and words to clergy exhorting them to not harm those who turn to them for healing and to not ignore other pastors who do.

In Part Two, Disclosure and Denial, we learn what happens when a woman tries to report her abuse. Scott explains the denial by the abuser, the denial by others, and the distortions of reality blaming the victim for what has happened. She devotes several pages to explaining why, although she is an adult, no woman who has gone to her pastor for counseling can ever give consent to a sexualized relationship and why she is never at fault. She quotes the ethics statements of five national professional organizations: psychologists, psychiatrists, counselors, marriage and family therapists, and Christian counselors. Each forbid any sexual contact between their members and those they serve. She ends this section with why pastors try to pass the buck instead of accepting responsibility for what happened, what God has to say about those who abuse, and words to clergy and congregations.

Part Three is devoted to The Aftermath, discussing in detail how the victim is impacted by the abuse: guilt, impaired ability to trust, ambivalence, emptiness and isolation, emotional volatility, suppressed anger, sexual confusion, increased suicidal risk, role reversal and boundary disturbance, and cognitive dysfunction.

The book concludes with an Afterward, endnotes, a bibliography, and an extensive resource list including books, videos, organizations, and support groups.

So few people understand the necessity for equality in power in order for sex to be consensual. Ms. Scott does and she says it over many times in this book. Let's send copies to Hillary, who refers to her husband's "affairs". Let's send copies to all the reporters who refer to abused parishioners as having had "affairs" with their pastors. Let's give copies to all the Catholic bishops who think only children can be abused by priests. Let's make copies available to members of congregations whose pastor has abused women. Let's give copies to our family, friends and neighbors, and let us pray they read them!

This Book Speaks the Truth
...I thank God for inspiring Ms. Scott to write such an honest and true book about what happens when a trusted man of the cloth betrays a congregant. Words cannot express the devastation the victim and her family experience when a pastor crosses boundaries....The victim becomes the scarlet harlot and the perpetrator (pastor/ex-pastor) often garners sympathy and pity from the congregation. Ms. Scott has done an excellent job of shedding the true light on this type of abuse. I applaud her for "speaking" for thousands of us who have been victimized in our "houses of faith" and still cannot speak publicly for ourselves because of the continued pain, embarassment, humiliation, and intimidation we experience. She offers us encouragement and hope. If you truly want to find out what it means to be sexually abused by a pastor/priest/rabbi, read Ms. Scott's book. She speaks the truth. To those professionals who are entrusted with seeking the truth, preventing this type of boundary violation, and providing recovery services to victims and families, please wake up and take your responsibility seriously. Stop the sinful secrets, lies, and cover-ups in our churches. Thank you, Ms. Scott, for your bravery in providing this thought provoking and credible resource.

Speaking as a csa survivor...
The Hired Hand, by Donna E. Scott, is an honest and well written book about clergy sexual abuse. I am a survivor of such abuse and I believe her observations and conclusions to be just and revealing. I was particularily drawn to the parts where Ms. Scott reports how many church families (secondary victims) respond badly to the primary victims. I loved and trusted my church family. They, however, made me the scapegoat for the losses they suffered when the silence was finally broken. To this day, 2 and 1/2 years after I broke the silence, many continue to harass me in my place of work. Ms. Scott's book gives me a feeling of not being alone in that regard.

Ms. Scott begins by drawing a distinction between two types of leaders based on John 10. One is the Good Shepherd and as such represents all that is good and to be honored and trusted in our clergy. The other is the Hired Hand. Ms. Scotts book needs to be read to give a clear picture reguarding the manner in which the vulnerable are manipulated by the hired hand. Hired hands rape souls and steal lives. This book is a window through which the reader can "see" how boundary violations happen. It also allows the reader to look inside the head of these cunning thieves.

This is a book for both primary and secondary victims. It is a "must read" for church leaders many of whom remain unfortunately uneducated to the issues involved in clergy sexual abuse. It contains much information as to how a church may validate the primary victims as well as heal from the trama they, themselves, endure when the trusted clergy betrays that trust. Ms. Scott reminds us all, that clergy wear a collar that says "I am trustworthy" that "I speak for God" and the wounding which occures when trusted clergy are revealed as the predators they are, is devistating to all the victims.

How Wall Street Works
Published in Digital by McGraw-Hill ()
Author: David L. Scott
Average review score:

Easy to read, cheap and interesting
Why five stars: cause it's a nice book for those that know wall street without really understanding how it works (so great title). Still it is soft but the content is rather strong, not too boring, short and the p[resentation is very good. Built aroud lots of questions-answers, that might interest a very large public.
Advice: Buy it cause it is very cheap for the information it provides compared to other books
Note: That is a great introductory book

Investment information I could understand
I found this book to be an excellent source of investment information for a novice investor such as myself. Written in common English, the author doesn't try to impress the reader with big words and far out theory. I recommend this to any person who wants to learn the basics of investing.

A very good introduction to investing
This is one of the best books I have found for expaining investing to a novice like myself. The author has done a good job of discussing difficult topics in an easily understandable manner. I highly recommend this book.

In the Time of the Drums (Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award Winner)
Published in Hardcover by Jump at the Sun (April, 1999)
Authors: Kim L. Siegelson, Brian Pinkney, and J. Brian Pinkney
Average review score:

A Powerful Sory of a Powerful People
In the Time of the Drums is an excellent story of the Gullah heritage. It tells of a people who have not forgotten. Young Mentu is told of a time by his grandmother Twi, when he will be "strong-strong." Twi, a wise, respected elder of the community, leads her people home. Mentu is "strong-strong" as he passes the heart-felt beats, and stories that can't be forgotten to descendents, and to us.

definitely a book to keep and to give away as a true "gift"
Siegelson has a mastery of words that is incredible. The rhythm of the words becomes immediately apparent as you read and it is definitely something you'll want to share right away. Brian Pinkey does a wonderful job, as usual, and the lines of his drawings echo the rhythm and lyricism of the story. I think it is interesting and appropriate to the story (you'll understand after you read it) that althought the story is based in historical fact, it is not limited by it. If you are an african-american parent, buy this book. If you are not an african-american parent, buy this book. I will be watching for the next by Kim Siegelson. Signed, a Children's Librarian in Oklahoma.

Rich and meaningful
This book is rich in illustration and in story. The book resonates like a powerful drum beat. The author tells a tale that seems passed from generation to generation. This is a great read for Black History Month. This is a book you will read again and again to your children. The suggested age for readers of 4 to 8 is really too limiting. Children of all ages will enjoy and be moved by this book.

Initiate
Published in Paperback by Red Wheel/Weiser (December, 1981)
Author: Cyril Scott
Average review score:

A spiritual walk down memory lane with a fairy tale
This book is for the spiritual seeker. Sure you can say it is geared to one with occult/mystism background... one of those direct routes to the subject. The book starts where Mr Scott goes into detail talking of an aquantance who is an adapt. This is written very cryptically so that you are to know that the people of the story doesn't matter (and he does not tell you his name or any of the other's name but assures you that it is completely his history) the book is written in the early twenty-th century and styled very much in the english manner of writting at the time. Getting to know the adapt and the author filled with me with energy as I read it. It was as intended deeply spiritual for me.
The second half of the book is written as the ACTUAL story though not exactly of the same magnitude as the first half in spiritual revelation. This is where you start following the path of an initiate which is clearly a story of illistration. The story is of a man who had spent very much time imbibing in the physical and is now on a spiritual quest. The charactors are written in a manner to remind me of a very structured disney adventure that is of the enlightening nature. I am now waiting for the second and third book. Highly recommended! Blessed Be

Phenomenal!
For those interested in mysticism/the occult, this is a fantastic book. It's actually two stories in one: an autobiographical story about an encounter with an amazingly advanced human being, and a long fictional story of the journey of an adept. You can't help but want to be a better person after having read it. It's no overstatement to say that it changed my life.

An insighhtful look into the philosophies of a great soul.
I was fortunate enough to find a copy of this book. Introduced to the idea of "initiates" by Benjamin Creme, another writer on esoteric subject matters, the title of the book caught my eye. The value of this book is is the direct account that the writer gives of "Justin Haig's" adventures. Other writers that I have read are only able to talk from the perspective of a student of the teachings that people like the Haig person of this book lived and taught in his life in London. I consider this book on the same level of excellence as "Autobiography of A Yogi."

Lift and Separate

Too funny!
"Baby Blues" is a wonderfully hilarious comic strip! "Life and Separate" is just as funny as "She started it!: a Baby blues cartoon collection." No matter how many times you read them, you'll still laugh! Need a pick-me-up? Get the "Baby Blues" books! I recommend!

If you're a fan of Baby Blues you'll love this one.
If you've ever read the Baby Blues comic strip or any of their other books you'll love this one. This book is absolutely hilarious and really delves into the relationship of siblings and what it's like to be a parent of more than one child.

BabyBlues a.k.a My Life in Review by Kirkman & Scott
I truly recommend Baby Blues to everyone with or without children. I honestly believe Rick Kirkman and Jerry Scott live in my house. I have been an avid fan of Baby Blues since it's inception. I have collected every book written by them. I know that this is only a comic but it is well written from both a parent's and a child's view. It is soemthing that can be read and enjoyed again and again.

Man on the Moon (Newmarket Shooting Script (Paper))
Published in Paperback by Newmarket Press (May, 2000)
Authors: Scott Alexander, Larry Karaszewski, and Larry Karazewski
Average review score:

Puts the film in an entirely different light
If you've seen the film enoughto be fiarly familiar with it's structure and narrative, this script will be a revelation. As stated in the title, this is a "shooting script",the original version submitted to the producers at the onset of the film's production, before the actors and director started fiddling with it.There are many, many scenes and passages here that greatly clarify the direction of the story and provide crucial motivations and psychological subtexts that you may miss in the completed film. However, scriptwriters Scott Alexander and Larry Karaczewski provide insight into this in the fantastic forward to the script,in the process giving a fascinating glimse into all the labirynthine exigencies involved in getting an original spark of insiration into the multiplex. They explain the step-by-step process of telling Kaufman's story-what to put in,what to leave out,how to handle certain aspects of his life, shaping the messy, complicated, and open-ended events of his career into something resembling a coherent,three-act drama.Ultimately, they decided-wisely-to treat the film as Andy would have,to let his art and performances define the film, just as they defined his life, and to use a constantly shifting base of perspective to keep the audience on thier toes,a brilliantly executed exercise in what-is-real and what-isn't.If you loved the film, this script provides an essential companion that will give you a new appreciation for it,but even if you're not particularly fond of it,or even Andy Kaufman hiomself, this is still a fascinating look at the creative process, and how it holds up throughout the production of a film.Highly recommended.

This IS a shooting script!
WOW! This is a GREAT example of a shooting script, something that was very different before the movie, and was molded into a more "managable" form through shooting and editing.

But is managable a better thing? Scott and Larry are great screenwriters, and crafted a great screenplay here. However, Milos Forman (the director) took the movie and made it into something not as personal as it could have been. Oh well.

But this is why shooting scripts that are actually the original script before any shooting ever took place are important (you hearing this American Beauty?). To show us how a screenplay can change when it goes from paper to celluloid.

Read this screenplay to see what the movie could have been like :)

Yes! It's that good!
"Man on the Moon" has to be on my top three best screenplay list for 1999-2000. It's a great screenplay with great words and conversations. I love it and I'm sure you will too.

Wonderful memory tracking book
It is structured nicely with a lots of delighted illustrations till older age. Compare to all other similar books, I rated it the best!

Wonderful Keepsake for parents or child
I bought this book and was so pleases with it that I have since purchased several copies as baby shower gifts for friends. It is a wonderful way of keeping track of the little things we tend to forget about our children as they grow up. It covers so many different aspects of their lives: friends, birthdays, family traditions, school and church information. I wished my mother would have kept recorded memories of my childhood so I could share them with my children. I can't wait to give the books to my children when they are old enough to appreciate them. What a special keepsake which can be passed down through the generations.

top of the line ,"Classic", to be treasured for Years !
I bought one copy of this book several months ago. After getting it home and perusing it...I discovered some unique and special advantages it has.Birthdays, special friends, family information are all regular features in most books....this book has all that...plus one more extremely special feature...you can also catalog your Child's "Spiritual", "Religious" or "Christian" journey through life...starting as an infant and continueing through their growing years! "Hat's off" to Terri Gibbs and Word Publishers...I wish I would have had one of these with my 20 year old...I bought her one anyway...and went through old memory books to fill in the blanks..Now my 13 year old daughter and 8 year old son also have their own...MAKES A GREAT GIFT FOR ANY MOM OR KID!

History of the World Christian Movement: Earliest Christianity to 1453 (History of the World Christian Movement, Vol 1)
Published in Paperback by Orbis Books (September, 2001)

Average review score:

Looking in New Directions
Church history books typically look at the development of Christianity in the Middle East and then across Europe. This work takes us East into China , South into Egypt and Nubia , and North into Russia. The contributors are from varied backgrounds, are both female and male , and have some new, fresh perspectives. The scholarship is impressive ,yet not obscure . If anything, the reader yearns to know more of certain figures in Christian lore. This is an important and welcome book.

Wow, what a great book
Wow, what a great book. these guys really know their stuff! I think my dad is the man, and Dale is an OK guy too. However, Rev. Dr. Mr. Scott Sunquist must watch out for his son, who might out-publish him!! Great book!!

Comprehensive history of Christianity as a world religion
Dale Irvin and Scott Sunquist's History Of The World Christian Movement presents an introductory volume which covers earliest Christianity to 1453. It's the first comprehensive history of Christianity as a world religion and covers the evolution and history of Christianity around the world.

The Intellect Industry: Profiting and Learning from Professional Services Firms
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Son Ltd (November, 1998)
Author: Mark C. Scott
Average review score:

An Excellent Intro to the Economy and Org Structure of PSFs
This was just the book I was looking for. You'll find it most useful, if, like me, you're a relatively recent college graduate looking to understand the financial aspects of that hot new PSF that you've started working for. What makes it tick? Why do I have to fill out a friggin' time sheet every friggin' week? Answers to burning questions like those await you.

You'll also find it most useful if you have some accounting or financial analyst background, because it does get into the P&L and balance sheet equations a bit, and generally assumes that you know what it's talking about.

I have had an accounting class or three (I'm in the process of taking the CFA), but even so, I found myself wondering if i'd bother reading the book every time I hit one of the accounting bits, which I found to be the low points.

The most successful parts of this book were the areas in which the author discusses the tradeoffs between the "Creeping Minority" and "Earn-out" methods of acquiring a PSF; lays out the pros and cons of being a product or sector-focused PSF; and the writing on the underlying economics of a PSF, including the bit on organizational structure, utilization and charge-out rates.

And mostly, Scott writes about all of this in an unadorned, easily-understood style. Excellent reading -- but only dead authors earn five stars from me.

A rare gem. The perfect complement to "Value Drivers".
"Intellect Industry" is ostensibly about how to manage people and intangibles in the professional service industry. But, far, far more than that. Fills what was a vacuum in this field. A little gem, with often overlooked fundamental insights that make or break a professional service firm (PSF). An essential book for anyone setting up a new firm. I read it over and over again.

I suggest that readers who will certainly find this book useful should also consult the recent 2nd edition of M.C.Scott's first book, "Value Drivers". Equally insightful. Considering them together, suggests that a third book by Scott with the larger over view might turn this into the essential trilogy for the PSF industry.

Would be wonderful if "Intellect Industry" and "Value Drivers" were bundled together. Would make for the basis of an excellent PSF management course.

Understanding the economics of a professional service firm
Highly Recommended. A fantastic book targeted at entrepreneurs wishing to setup a professional service firm (PSF) or managers within an existing organisation seeking to understand how they can increase the profitability of their firm. I wish that I had had this book when I started my first PSF some seven years ago, I could have avoided a _lot_ of mistakes and possibly become profitable faster as well.

I have been in the Internet Consulting field for a while and I know that many of the startups in this industry might be well advised to pick this book.

This is not a "how to" book. Instead it explains the basic economics of a PSF.

On my way to starting a second PSF I will undoubtedly read this book again shortly...
